The "Bouillotte Lamp," as it appears in 19th-century furniture inventories, emerged at the end of Louis XVI's reign. It takes its name from the game of bouillotte and illuminates the players gathered around the table with a sliding mechanism that allows the light intensity to be adjusted.

The bouillotte lamp continued to be used during the Empire period and became a practical tool. Napoleon was even depicted by Jacques-Louis David in his study in 1812 with a bouillotte lamp on his desk (NGA, Washington, 1961.9.15).

Made of gilt bronze with a painted sheet metal shade, often green, our bouillotte lamp presents an original variation: its stem is made of cut crystal.
