Jean-Baptiste-Claude Séné (1748–1803), received master in 1769

The eldest son of Claude I Séné, Jean-Baptiste-Claude Séné was the most renowned representative of this lineage of Parisian menuisiers. Established on the rue de Cléry, he quickly gained considerable renown and, from 1785 onwards, became, together with Jean-Baptiste-Claude Boulard, a supplier to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. He provided furniture for Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Compiegne, and Fontainebleau.

This revolving desk armchair displays several features characteristic of his production: the breadth of the forms, majestic proportions, impeccable quality of execution, and a restrained decorative vocabulary, such as the one sold by Christie's, Monaco, 12 December 1999, lot 820, for 200 000 francs.
