Founded in 1844 by Carl Gottlob in Schwäbisch Gmünd (Province of Baden-Württemberg), the Erhard & Söhne manufactory earned its reputation under the leadership of Carl and Julius Erhard, making the company a leading player in the region. Combining decorative art, technique and research, the company has distinguished itself through its productions that echo the great artistic movements of its time, as evidenced by these jewellery boxes whose sinuous, plant-inspired ornamentation evokes the curves of Art Nouveau, better known as Jugendstil across the Rhine. True representations of late 19th-century German folklore, these objects are illustrated with no fewer than ten scenes from the tales of the Brothers Grimm. The family-owned manufacturer in Baden-Württemberg uses a highly precise technique, in this case Boulle marquetry with two-tone inlays.
