Description
the first, a gold and blond tortoiseshell snuff box, probably German, circa 1725, rectangular with rounded corners, the lid inlaid in gold with a group of ladies and gentlemen dancing, flanked by musicians seated in pavilions below swags of flowers, 8.5 cm., 3 3/8 in. wide;
the second, a gold-mounted blond tortoiseshell and gold piqué snuff box, Naples, circa 1730, cartouche-shaped, the lid inlaid with figures idling in front of a choppy piqué point sea, classical ruins among pine trees and two strollers admiring a sculpture on a plinth in the background, framed with piqué posé scrollwork, reeded gold mounts with a slender thumbpiece, the stepped base inlaid with a small fortress and scrolling elements, apparently unmarked apart from later control marks, 7 cm., 2 ¾ in. wide
