Lot Details

Description

rectangular, all six sides with hunting scenes, the lid with three figures on horseback hunting a stag with hounds in front of a woodland-set capriccio, the base with a boar hunt, the sides with rabbit and waterfowl shoots, with wavy borders, both the long sides hinging open

9 cm., 3 1/2 in.

The hunting scenes represented on the current lot are likely based on the paintings and engravings of Johann Elias Ridinger and Jean-Baptiste Oudry. Both artists became well known throughout Europe in the second quarter of the 18th century for their pictures of animals and hunts.

Scenes in the same genre and style can be seen on porcelain snuff boxes and other wares produced by Meissen in the 1740s and 50s.
