Bequest of Arthur B. Michael, 1942.
Single portraits of well-dressed handsome youths and beautiful young ladies were very popular in Safavid Iran in the late sixteenth and seventeenth century. The design of gold rabbits depicted on the red robe of the lady in the present painting is reminiscent of seventeenth century Safavid dress which often had bold patterns of birds, animals and human figures. Many paintings working in an archaeistic style were also produced during the Qajar period in the nineteeth century.
