Ulrich Pietsch, Preziosen einer süddeutschen Kunstsammlung, Hirmer, Munich, 2001, p. 136

Louis-François, son of Jean-François Tronquoy and Louise Ferdinande Morin was born on 20 May 1798 at 639 rue des 4 vents, 11e arrondissement, Paris. He first entered a mark for la tabatière on 4 January 1827 from 8 rue des Prouvaires, probably taking over the business and premises of the box-maker Simon-Achille Léger. Tronquoy continued to work at the same address until 28 June 1871. Following current fashions, Tronquoy’s work developed from transitional delicately-engraved Restauration boxes to the more colourful enamelled and jewelled presentation boxes of the Deuxième Empire. Interestingly, the present lot is a hommage to Parisian gold and enamel boxes from the previous century which is rather unusual at this date.
