The monogram is probably that of Reuben David Sassoon (1835-1905), fourth son of paterfamilias David Sassoon. Born in Bombay, he served his business apprenticeship in the East, but moved to London in 1867. He became a member of the Marlborough House set, the social circle around the Prince of Wales, but also remained observant and collected Judaica, being one of two primary private lenders to the great 1887 Anglo-Jewish Historical Exhibition.
