of heavy weight; with stamped borders of scrolls enclosing flowers, elaborate baroque columns flanking tablets above birds, below lions and crown, hung with three bells, fitted with four reversible portion plaques, marked on back with maker, city and 13


Height with bells 16½in. (42 cm)

At the top: “Donated by our master, our teacher, Rabbi Jehiel Mikhl for his sons... Joshua Heschel and Abraham Moses.”


Ansbach, in Bavaria, had a synagogue by 1746. In 1875 it had a population of 200 Jews (Engelbert, Statistik des Judenthums in Deutschen Reiche, p. 16)
