At the end of the reign of Louis XV, the Sèvres manufactory produced a large number of vases of various shapes which it sold under the name of "vases to be mounted": they were bought exclusively by marchands-merçiers - such as Simon-Philippe Poirier - who resold them after having embellished them with gilded bronze mounts ordered from the best bronziers.
