Description

A Pair of Paris Gold-Ground Vases, probably decorated in Naples by Raffaele Giovine, Circa 1825

of classical form, affixed with handles terminal with lion-mask medallions and stiff acanthus, each finely painted with a continuous scene of single figures or couples in an Italianate rural landscape, upon a spreading foot on square base, indistinct incised marks

height 16 in.

40.6 cm

In the years following the closure of the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea factory as a result of the French occupation of Naples, undecorated Paris porcelain began to be imported and often decorated in Naples. Raffaele Giovine, who enjoyed patronage from the Duke of Calabria, later Francis I of Naples and the Two Sicilies, ran a lucrative porcelain decorating workshop painting such porcelain.

The figure painting on the present pair of vases can be compared with that seen on a rare inkwell in gilded bronze and French porcelain decorated in Naples by Raffaele Giovine circa 1820-1825, probably delivered for the King of Naples around 1820-1825. The inkwell sold at Replica Shoes 's Paris, The Léon Lévy Collection: Important French Furniture and Works of Art, October 2, 2008, lot 69.
