Description
An American Silver 'Martelé' Ice Cream Dish And Set Of Twelve Ice Cream Plates, Gorham Mfg.Co., Providence, Rhode Island, 1906
The rectangular dish with waved rim chased with violets and other flowers, the center with contemporary foliate monogram LE, marked and coded J over KM; the plates similarly chased and engraved, coded J over KN, both with key date symbol.

This ice cream dish was completed on February 9, 1906. It took 29 hours to form, then was chased by George W. Sauthof for 49 hours. The net factory price was $165. George W. Sauthof was German-born but emigrated to the U.S. in 1864, aged, twelve. He trained at Tiffany & Co. and worked there before moving to Gorham in 1884. He was one of the most highly-esteemed chasers at the company, and continued his work there until his death in 1927.
These plates were made to accompany the preceding dish and were completed on January 7, 1906. They required three hours each to make and then were chased for 13 hours by Sauthof. The net factory price was $30 each.
