Description

An American Silver 'Martelé' Three-Handled Cup, Gorham Mfg.Co., Providence, Rhode Island, 1899

Of inverted pear form, multiple-scroll handles ending in stylized dolphin feet, chased between with auricular masks, engraved on one side with script monogram EBJ, marked on base with eagle mark, date symbol, and sample number 2202.

9 1/2 in. (24 cm.) high

90 oz. 10 dwt. (2818 g)

Christie's New York, June 17, 1997, lot 1
Wolf Family Collection No. 1140 (acquired from the above)

This piece is marked on the bottom with what L.J. Pristo has identified as the "Type II" Martelé mark, with an eagle above the standard Gorham lion-anchor-G, but without the word Martelé yet added; this was used on pieces from late 1897 until 1900 (see Pristo, p. 152).

From notes when it was sold in 1997, this cup was finished August 17, 1899, and its net factory price was $350. This puts it in the very first period of Martelé creation, after the debut of the line in November, 1897, and before it was presented on a large scale at the Paris Exposition of 1900.
