Description
cartouche-shaped, the lid painted with Watteau-esque figures before a wooded landscape framed by gilt strapwork, the lid interior painted with a classical scene en camaïeu purple, the lid base with a courtly lady sitting before a tree, signed to lower left Herold. a Meissen, the sides similarly decorated, with gilt-metal mounts
Christian Friedrich Herold (Berlin c. 1700 - Meissen 1779) originally worked as a 'hausmaler' enamel painter in Berlin before moving to Meissen around 1725, where he was employed at the porcelain manufactory under Johann Gregorius Höroldt. Sources suggest that against the wishes of the Meissen directors, he continued to decorated Berlin enamel boxes independently and that in response, several disciplinary measures were taken against. An enamel snuff box signed "Herold fecit" is in the collection of the British Museum in London (inv. no. 1958,0502.1) and another was sold at Replica Shoes 's London, 10 December 2020, lot 23. For a detailed discussion of Christian Friedrich Herold’s work as a painter at Meissen and his association with the Fromery workshops in Berlin, see Hugh Tait, British Museum Quarterly, vol. 25, 1962 , pp. 39-41.
