MESH

1996

Sotheby’s is pleased to present Scottie Pippen’s game-worn shorts from the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. These white USA Men’s National Team shorts were worn by Pippen during his second Olympic gold medal run and come from one of the most successful tournaments in international basketball history.

Competing on home soil, the 1996 United States Men’s Basketball Team entered the Games with enormous expectations. Commonly known as “Dream Team III,” the roster reflected the continued growth of USA Basketball, bringing together established stars and a new generation of NBA talent. For Pippen, the Atlanta Games marked a rare milestone. With the Bulls’ NBA championship earlier that summer, he became the first player to win an NBA title and an Olympic gold medal in the same year on two separate occasions.

Team USA delivered a decisive performance throughout the tournament, winning all eight games and securing the gold medal. The team relied on strong defense, ball movement, and depth, winning by an average of more than 30 points per game and reaffirming its place at the top of international basketball.

Veterans like Pippen and Charles Barkley set the tone for the group. Pippen contributed across the floor, defending multiple positions, initiating offense, and providing steady leadership. Barkley, a holdover from the 1992 team, added experience and continuity between generations.

They were joined by a roster that included Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, David Robinson, Mitch Richmond, Reggie Miller, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Shaquille O’Neal, Gary Payton, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Under head coach Lenny Wilkens, the team played with consistency and cohesion from start to finish.

These shorts come directly from the Collection of Scottie Pippen.
