Acquired from George M. Butcher, Le Demain Doré Gallery, Montréal, 1986

George M. Butcher was a prominent art critic for The Guardian and a stalwart supporter of the burgeoning South Asian modern art scene. He spent more than two years in India and befriended many artists, gallerists and art critics. Using his knowledge and contacts, he curated several important shows on the region’s art featuring artists such as Ram Kumar, Francis Newton Souza and Anwar Jalal Shemza. Butcher was among the first writers to assert the remarkable contributions of South Asian modern artists to global modernism and left an indelible mark on South Asian art history.
