Description

with pierced backrests, two seats covered with a later white and blue striped upholstery, and the other two with a later bright blue upholstery

These chairs echo the fashion in the late 18th century for shield-backed chairs, which was long-lasting and included a great variety of splat detail. Cabinetmakers of the time took ideas from the influential engraved designs of George Hepplewhite (1789) and Thomas Sheraton (1793), often combining motifs or developing new ideas based on the published sources.

The design of the present chairs is particularly close to from Plate 2., fig. c and Plate 7, fig. f in George Hepplewhite's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide.
