Description

oval, the lid painted en plein with a young couple based on the stipple engraving 'Faire Emmeline' after Thomas Stothard, within fine paillon borders and split-pearl frame, matching sides and base with translucent blue enamel over zig-zag engine-turning, the base further centred with an elaborate paillon stylised flowerhead,

partially rubbed maker's mark crowned L? incuse,

The composition was published by John and Josaiah Boydell on 1 May 1787. It illustrated an excerpt from The Child of Elle from Thomas Percy's Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, published in 1765, in which Emmeline elopes, escaping down a ladder.
