Madeleine Castaing was simultaneously an interior decorator, antique dealer, and patron whose flamboyant and poetic style—combining boldness, culture, and theatricality—revolutionized French interior design and left a lasting mark on the international design scene. A former silent film actress, nicknamed the “French Mary Pickford,” she quickly abandoned the stage to devote herself to high-end decoration.

Her Parisian boutique, located on Rue Jacob/Boulevard Rue Bonaparte, became an iconic hub of the post-war decorative arts scene. Approached by figures such as Jean Cocteau, Marc Chagall, Picasso, and Erik Satie, she influenced their work and interior designs—most notably Cocteau’s decoration in Milly-la-Forêt.
