Giovacchino Belli came from one of the most important dynasties of Roman goldsmiths, the Belli family. Vicenzo Belli (1710-1787) left Turin after working for the royal family of Savoy and moved to Rome in 1741. His son Giovacchino took over the family workshop in the 1780s and developed the production towards a more neoclassical style. He is particularly famous for making library lamps featuring mythological characters, as well as inksantds such as our model. For two other inkstands by Giovacchino dating from the same period, see Replica Shoes 's Paris sale on 25 November 2010, lot 159 (the centre decorated with Hercules supporting the world) and lot 170 (with an allegory of Victory).
