The present table belongs to a well-known series of tables which Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814) started to produce primarily during the early part of 1796, up until his death in 1814, for the Napoleonic Court as furnishings for the reception rooms of the Royal Palace in Milan and the Villa di Monza. Used as games tables, either with a folding top or with the reverse inlaid with Moroccan leather or green baize, they stand out for their subtle variety of trompe l’oeil decoration and wood colours.
Giuseppe Beretti illustrates quite a few tables of this type (ill. Giuseppe Beretti, Giuseppe Maggiolini, L’Officina del Neoclassicismo, Milan, 1994, pp. 190-195). See in particular a pair of tables in the collections of the Civiche Raccolte d’Arte Applicata in Milan, Inv. NN 665 and 665 bis (ill. Giuseppe Beretti, op. cit., pp. 190-191).
The preparatory designs from the Maggiolini workshop for the execution of the foliate frieze, of the rosette and foliage on the exterior of this top, and of the frieze and flowers at the corners on the reverse of the top are recorded and held in the Civica Raccolta delle Stampe in Milan.
