A Saiga-bachi kabuto [Saiga style helmet]

Momoyama - Edo period, late 16th - early 17th century 


the sabiji-nuri [simulated russet iron] lacquered iron saiga-bachi [Saiga school helmet] in zunari form of eight plates with zaboshi [seated rivets], the apex comprising of plates to form a stylised chrysanthemum head, the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] in stenciled doeskin and applied with copper-gilt katabami mon [wood sorrel crests], copper-gilt fukurin [ornamental border] chased and engraved with scrollwork, four-tiered itamono-jikoro [neck guard with solid plates] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in yellow braid, gilt metal maedate [forecrest] in the form of bonji [Sanskrit characters], the sabji-nuri lacquered iron ressei mempo [face mask with fierce expression] forged with deep wrinkles, flared nostrils and open mouth, detachable nose plate, silver lacquer moustache and chin tuft, pronounced silver lacquer teeth, four-tiered yodaregake [throat protector] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in purple braid, this lot is sold with a metal helmet stand as illustrated


The bowl to peak: 28 cm., 11 in. 

The shikoro to peak: 36 cm., 14⅛ in. 

The mempo: 16 cm., 6¼ in. wide 

This helmet has a rare right turnback that is hinged in order to fold forward and facilitate the archer when he pulls the bow rope behind the helmet.
