A rare toppai-nari kabuto [high-sided helmet]
Edo period, 17th century
the conical six-plate russet iron bowl in toppai-nari [high-sided] form in European style, the plates riveted together by bands of iron cut in waves, the nails with oshi [wide protruding heads], terminating in a four-stage copper-gilt tehen kanamono of chrysanthemum form, decorated in gold and silver inlay with a three-clawed dragons among clouds, the russet iron mabisashi [peak] with stlyised clouds, copper-gilt fukurin, black lacquer fukigaeshi [turnbacks] decorated in gold hiramaki-e with goka ni chigai kamamon [crossed sickles within mokko crests], four-tiered black lacquer itamono Hineno-jikoro [solid plate close-fitting neck-guard] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in dark blue braid, this lot is sold with a metal helmet stand as illustrated
The bowl to peak: 26.7 cm., 10½ in.
The shikoro to peak: 34 cm., 13½ in.
