A choshin kabuto [collapsible helmet] and ho-ate [half mask]
Edo period, late 18th - early 19th century
the collapsible helmet comprised of five plates joined with sugake odoshi [spaced-lacing] in blue braid, plain black lacquer mabisashi [peak] and small fukigaeshi [turn backs], four-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neck guard], gilt metal maedate [forecrest] in the form of a stylised crescent moon above crashing waves and stylised barin [iris] leaves, black lacquered ho-ate [half mask], red lacquer interior, three-tiered black lacquer yodaregake [throat protector] laced in matching braid
The bowl to peak: 23 cm., 9 in.
The shikoro to peak: 30 cm., 11¾ in.
The ho-ate: 16.5 cm., 6½ in.
