Description

An Unusual American Book-Form Charity Box, for Yeshiva Boys in Eastern Europe, New York, circa 1940

formed in metal and leather as a book hanging on a chain, with Hebrew inscriptions for the Society on West 95th St., patent stamps for John Nutry, Brooklyn

Height 5½in. (14 cm)

On the reverse in Hebrew: “The Tomche Torah Society was founded by our teacher, the righteous genius, Dr. Hillel ha-Kohen Klein, may the memory of the righteous be a blessing. ‘Be watchful of the children of the poor, for Torah will issue from them’ [Nedarim 81a].”

For more on Rabbi Dr. Hillel (Philip) Klein (1849-1926), rabbi to Congregation Ohab Zedek (OZ), on New York's Upper West Side, see here: https://kevarim.com/rav-hillel-ha-kohen-klien/.

The Tomche Torah Society was founded in September 1924 to support yeshivah students (“bachurim”) in Central and Eastern Europe. The box was created after the Rabbi's death in 1926, and probably circa 1938-1939, when the name of the organization seems to have changed from Somche Torah to Tomche Torah Society, Inc. (see the difference between the way the organization is listed in The American Jewish Year Book vol. 39, p. 682, and vol. 40, p. 469).
