Description
Linschoten, Jan Huygen van
Two maps of Africa
Comprising: Typus orarum maritimarum Guineae, Manicongo & Angolae ... [and] Delineario Orarum maritimarum, Terra vulgo indigetatae Terra do Natal ... [Amsterdam: circa 1596, or later].
Overall 2 double-page engraved maps (408 x 535; 395 x 555 mm), early handcoloring; old horizontal and vertical folds with early paper reinforcements to verso, a few light dampstains, trimmed a bit close on one edge. Each matted, framed, and glazed.
Two of Linschoten's richly ornamented maps of Africa, with attractive handcoloring.
The maps respectively show the eastern and western coasts of Africa, the former showing Madagascar, part of the Indian Ocean, and and parts of present day India and Sri Lanka; the latter showing the coast from the Gulf of Guinea to the Cape of Good Hope, with an inset view of Ascension and S. Helena in profile. Both are replete with sailing ships, sea monsters, mermaids, animals, rose compasses, and cartouches.
