Description

Horapollo

Sacris Notis & sculpturis libri duo... Greek translation by Philippus. Edited by Jean Mercier. Paris: Kerver, 1551

8vo (165 x 104 mm). Roman and Greek type. 195 woodcuts in text; title with early inscriptions effaced, later pencil identification of Mercerus, occasional toning and soiling. Early blind-ruled calf, gilt floral tools at corners and center of sides; rebacked, lacking front free-endpaper, stain at foot of spine where label removed.

The first Kerver bilingual edition. Praz contends that the interest in hieroglyphs among the humanists began with this work. The cuts are attributed to Jean Cousin or Jean Goujon, and this series first appeared in the French edition of 1543. In this edition, seven of the 1543 blocks have been replaced with new blocks that were slightly, or entirely, redesigned.
