Jackson lists two Tudor rose maker's marks (Jackson, 1989, pp. 93 and 100). The first, identified for Henry Gillard, is within a circle punch and appears on a communion cup from 1558-59. The second is within a pentagonal punch and is also on a communion cup, but from 1581-82. The mark on the present lot is a Tudor rose without frame. It is worth noting that the maker has modelled the thumbpiece as a pair of Tudor roses, possibly suggesting his name.
