An Apulian Red-figured Volute Krater

attributed to the Circle of the White Sakkos Painter, circa 330-310 B.C.


the body painted in front within a naiskos with a cuirassed and helmeted warrior standing next to his horse, a woman holding a mirror and a warrior with shield, spears, and helmet seated on each side, and on the back with two women and two youths on either side of a stele supporting a kantharos, the neck decorated in front with a woman's head emerging from an acanthus calyx beneath a band of circles, rosettes, palmettes, and masks, the details in added white and yellow.

Height 89 cm.

Jürgen Haering, Galerie am Museum, Freiburg im Breisgau, acquired from a private collection in 1997 or earlier

acquired by the present owner from the above in 2000
