An Iwai school daienzan suji-bachi [hemispherical-shaped helmet]
Edo period, 18th century
the hemispherical lacquer bowl with raised ridges, the frontal plates ornately pierced with trailing foliage, rising into a copper-gilt tehen kanamono, the stenciled leather mabisashi [peak] and large fukigaeshi [turnbacks] decorated with lions and cherry blossoms on a dense profusion of scrolling foliage, copper-gilt fukurin, the large turnbacks applied with copper-gilt myoga mon [ginger crests], the four-tiered shikoro [neckguard] black lacquer in kawa odoshi [leather-laced] with stenciled cherry blossoms, the large kuwagata pierced with boar's eye openings (inome-bori) and terminating with stylised clouds, the kuwagata-dai chased and engraved with chrysanthemums and foliate scrolls
The shikoro to peak: 38.3 cm., 15 in.
