Matewan (1987) Poster, US, Signed by James Earl Jones
Photographer: Bob Marshak
Designer: Ross Culbert Holland & Lavery, NYC
Unframed: 41 x 27 in. (104 x 69 cm)
Mr. Sohal met James Earl Jones at the Old Vic Theatre, London, when he was in Much Ado About Nothing.
It is rare for anyone to have an original poster signed, as the majority of signatures are on pieces of paper, photographs, and video/DVD sleeves.
This film was written and directed by John Sayles and stars Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones, Mary McDonnell, and Will Oldham. It is a dramatization of the Battle of Matewan, which took place in the small town of Matewan, West Virginia in 1920, between local coal miners, who were being dominated and harassed by the mining company, and who went on strike to try and gain acknowledgment from the United Mine Workers of America union. The Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency was employed to evict the miners from their company homes, which resulted in the Matewan massacre.
