Description

Ottoman Turkish manuscript on vellum, 8 lines of text in alternating gold and black diwani script, surmounted by a large gold tughra within a radiating cartouche

92.5 by 69.7cm.

This firman, unusually executed on vellum rather than paper, relates to Osman Nuri Pasha, also known as Osman Gazi Pasha, a military officer in the Ottoman forces who rose to the rank of Field Marshal. The firman awards him the title of ghazi, a bejewelled medal of the Order of the Ottoman Empire, an imperial sword handle and two armoured horses from the imperial stables, in recognition of his services during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78.
