The eight films that Marlene Dietrich made with her erstwhile lover Josef von Sternberg, have come to form their own small but significant sub-genre. Neither the actress not the director succeeded in replicating the magic formula in their work with other collaborators. In this film, Dietrich's favourite film, von Sternberg idolises his lover by creating a parallel synthetic world in which she represents a dangerous and unattainable ideal of woman.
