This pair of chenets is modelled after two pairs of chenets, differing sizes, delivered by the French court bronzier Quentin-Claude Pitoin to the Garde Meuble de la Couronne in 1767 (see Svend Eriksen, Early Neo-classicism in France, London, 1972, p. 357, pl. 224). One pair was destined for the bedroom of Madame Victoire at Saint-Hubert while the other was sent to the Château de Compiègne. A third pair was delivered on 29th November 1773 to the Comte d'Artois at Versailles.
