The Property of a Lady;
Sotheby's London, Fine French Furniture, Tapestries and Clocks, 5 December 1969, lot 34.
The model for the present commode was inspired by a group of commodes executed by the celebrated French ébéniste Jean-Henri Riesener in the second half of the 18th century (C. Payne, Paris Furniture, the luxury market of the 19th century, 2018, p.187). The design was greatly enjoyed by a wide range of 19th century makers such as Linke. This commode particularly relates to an example attributed to Riesener in the collects ions of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. 1087-1882) and a further one by Riesener, sold Christie's Paris, Boniface de Castellane & Anna Gould, 7 March 2017, lot 69.
The firm of William Bertram & Son were established from 1830 and traded on Dean Street from 1839. See C. Gilbert, ed., Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p.18. Generally thought of as both retailers and cabinet makers, they specialised in brass-inlaid and marquetry furniture and retailed French 18th century style furniture.
