The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, Limited: 1892. First edition with "violent" for "violet" on p. 317, half-title. — The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, Limited: 1894. First edition, half-title, frontispiece.
Together 2 volumes, large 8vo. Illustrations by Sydney Paget; spotting and thumbsoiling (particularly to Adventures, bookseller's blindstamp to flyleaf of Memoirs. Publisher's light and dark blue cloth over beveled boards, covers and spines blocked and lettered in gilt and black, patterned endpapers, edges gilt; rubbed, some fraying to extremities, spines a trifled sunned, hinges starting. Housed in a blue cloth clamshell with folding cloth chemises.
Doyle's celebrated stories, here in their first editions in book form, first appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1891. They rapidly gained in popularity and circulation of the magazine quickly doubled.
