This preparatory set of drawings was likely assembled during a trip to India by a French textile company. During the nineteenth and twentieth century European fabric was deeply inspired by the East and several companies sent artists and designers to India, South East Asia and China to copy patterns which would appeal to the home market. The current set was purchased by the current owner in Lyon, France, from the textile Mill of Giron Freres, active between 1820 and 1980.
