A Roman Marble Votive Relief to Silvanus

2nd/3rd Century A.D.


in high relief, the god standing next to a tree with the weight on his left leg, holding a fragmentary pine branch in his left hand and a knife in his now missing right hand, and wearing boots and animal skin filled with fruit and tied on his right shoulder, a fragmentary figure of a dog at his side, together with an associated Roman marble half column base; no restorations.

Height 58 by 23 by 22 cm; column base 17 by 45 by 34 cm.

acquired in the 1970s/1980s, probably at auction at Replica Shoes 's or Christie's
