New Zealand—James Hector

Three Sketches of Tongariro

two dated 1867, one dated 1870, watercolours on paper, between 128 x 255mm. and 179 x 253mm., mounted on a single folio sheet of card, each captioned in pen or pencil in the image, additional ink captions on the mount (possibly by J.D. Hooker), mount slightly worn at extremities

The first definite ascent of Mount Tongariro was made by Sir James Hector (1834-1907) on 23 November 1867 during his geological survey of Otago. Hector secured the paid scientific position which enabled him to conduct his three-year-long survey with the assistance of Roderick Murchison and Joseph Dalton Hooker.
