A Louis XVI carved giltwood firescreen, circa 1780, in the manner of Georges Jacob


on shaped legs, with a manuscript label inscribed 'Blanche / 32',  with distressed silk, probably Chinese, 18th century, painted with delicate trails of foliage with small pink roses, and further small blue, red and white flowers, with delicate butterflies, on a golden silk ground, the reverse panel embroidered with sprigs of delicate flowers and foliage, tied with a tasselled ribbon worked in metal-thread, against a plain golden silk ground

115cm. high, 78.5cm. wide, 44cm. deep; 3ft. 9¼in., 2ft. 7 in., 1ft. 5¼in.

The present could well have once belonged to a suite of seating furniture with similar carvings bearing bold scrolls and variated foliage. Louis XVI firescreens of the same interesting oval shape are recorded, notably one sold at Christie's, New York, 26th September 2001, lot 459 and another sold Replica Shoes 's, London, 5th December 1980, lot 87.
