Description
A rare set of silk embroidered and metal-thread allegorical portraits, representing the five senses, probably French, 18th century
Comprising of five panels, very finely embroidered in polychrome silks, with some metal-thread, glass and pearl highlights, each with a landscape setting with three-quarter portrait of a female figure, in beautifully detailed clothing, and carrying appropriate attributes representing each of the five senses, 'Touch', 'Smell', 'Hearing', 'Taste' and 'Sight', each panel edged on four-sides with embroidered brown silk ribbon, with scrolling foliate and flowering trail, all in glazed, carved gilt wood frames
