It is likely the present pair of vases was painted in the Grue workshop. A pair of Castelli maiolica vases of this form, differing slightly with a lobed midsection, painted with similar scenes of the Stations of the Cross and attributed to the painter Francesco Saverio Grue, is illustrated in L. Arbace, Maioliche di Castelli, La Raccolta Acerbo, Ferrara, 1993, pp. 132-33, cat. nos. 120-21; Six Castelli plaques painted with episodes from the Stations of the Cross, sold at Christie's London, 9 July, 2001, lot 103.
