Description

A Pair of Porcelain Spill Vases with Hebrew Presentation Inscriptions, probably Hungarian, dated 1845

the fronts painted with flowers within gilt scrolls, highlighted in blue, the backs with extensive gilt Hebrew inscription with blessings for a new home and date 1845, one signed "Haggai K.," marked on bases

Height 7¼in. (18.4 cm)

On one of the vases: “The glory of this latter house shall be greater than that of the former one, and in this place the Lord of Hosts will grant prosperity.” This is a slight paraphrase of Hag. 2:9, cited in Latin characters below the Hebrew.

On the other: “May only blessing dwell in the house that you have built, / May no sound of sorrow or sighing be heard therein, / And may the bloom of success never wither / Which, up till now, has blossomed on the staff of Aaron.” The bolded words give the year: [5]605=1845.
