On a titled plate, “The Author of the Figures à la Grecque,” the French architect Petitot, in the service of the Duke of Parma and Professor at the Academy of Parma, depicts himself in a costume that is half-Greek, half-Egyptian, holding in his hands a cathedral plan and a compass.
The other engravings are titled: “Shepherd à la Grecque,” “Shepherdess à la Grecque,” “The Groom à la Grecque,” “The Bride à la Grecque,” “Young Monk à la Grecque,” “Vivandière à la Grecque,” “Priestess à la Grecque,” and “Grenadier à la Grecque.” Each shows grotesque costumes composed of architectural elements in the neo-classical style.
