Marco Ricci's small paintings of this type, executed in tempera or gouache, generally on a kidskin support, have been prized by collectors ever since the eighteenth century. Although the artist experimented with this medium fairly early in his career, it was during the last fifteen years of his life that he produced the majority of his works executed using this attractive and luminous technique.

Influenced by the great Roman and Venetian masters Giovanni Paolo Pannini, Antonio Canaletto, and Francesco Guardi, Ricci excelled in creation of architectural capricci, such as the present work. These compositions often feature a number of recurring motifs, for example the ruined pyramid, here seen on the left, and the equestrian statue, which can be seen in another gouache on kidskin work at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (inc. no. 1982.38.2).
