Louisa Haerens Robelus specialised in the depiction of felines. She won acclaim as an artist in 1914, when her drawings of kittens and adult cats were exhibited at the Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels, resulting in Queen Elisabeth becoming her patron. Later she was introduced to sculpture by Albert Hager (1857-1940), creating accomplished bronzes like the present work which focus on the animals' volume and texture.
