This magnificent pair is certainly unique among the large production of silver candlesticks by Louis-Joseph Lenhendrick. It was probably a prestigious commission.

Although this pair of candlesticks was made around 1750, the coat of arms was applied around 1847 following the marriage of Eugène Raffard de Marcilly (1822-1889), who married Anne Denise Joséphine Marie (known as Nancy) Poisson (1823-1919) on 29 September 1847.

Eugène Raffard de Marcilly was sub-prefect of Peronne in 1853, then prefect during the Second Empire and Knight of the Legion of Honour. He was the owner of the Villa Bijou in Monaco, where he retired for the last ten years of his life. They lived in Paris at 3 rue Béranger in the 3rd arrondissement. He was the son of Bégnigne Raffard de Marcilly (1786-1850), an artillery colonel. He was an Officer of the Legion of Honour, Knight of Saint Louis and Knight of the Order of Saint Ferdinand of Spain and Louise Clémentine Clémentine d'Herbel.

Nancy Poisson was the daughter of the famous mathematician Siméon Denis Poisson (1781-1840), Baron Poisson in 1821, Peer de France in 1837, elected to the Académie des Sciences in 1812 and Commander of the Légion d'Honneur in 1837. He graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1798 and married Anne de Bardi (1792-1873).

Si cette paire de flambeaux a été réalisée vers 1750, les armoiries ont été appliquées vers 1847 à la suite de l’alliance d'Eugène Raffard de Marcilly (1822-1889) qui épousa le 29 septembre 1847 Anne Denise Joséphine Marie (dite Nancy) Poisson (1823-1919).

Eugène Raffard de Marcilly fut sous-préfet de Peronne en 1853, puis préfet du second Empire, chevalier de la Légion d’honneur.
