Reprint of the 1549 edition of Paolo Manuzio’s translation of the four Philippics of Demosthenes.

 

4to (190 x 135 mm). Roman type, 25 lines plus headline. collation: A-N4: 52 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device on title-page. (Title with restoration not affecting type, and with small hole and stain to lower corner, some minor foxing.)

 

binding: Late eighteenth-century or early nineteenth-century English calf (196 x 150 mm), signed E.D. Dowes, Binder, Salop, boards with blind-tooled border flanked by gilt rules, inside dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, grey endpapers. (Rebacked, a bit rubbed.)

 

provenance: S. Benedetto, Bergamo (Capuchin monastery), inscription on title-page — Augustus Frederick, Royal Duke of Sussex (1773-1843); his sale, R.H.
