Distinguished Property from Osterrieth House in Antwerp

A Flemish Classical Tapestry, 'Oriana receiving war booty from Amadis, in King Lisuart's castle', from the story of Amadis and Oriana, after design by Louis van Schoor and Pieter Spierincx, Brussels,

18th century


Woven with a queen seated on her throne, on a dais, under a canopy, holding a sceptre, and being passed a crown by her attendant, with two young boys at her side, one with a laurel wreath (victory), the other carrying a fasces (Roman symbol of authority), in a landscape setting, 

Within a four-sided frame pattern border with bouquets of flowers, with dark brown outer selvedges

approximately 342cm. high, 275cm. wide

For a comparable subject see a weaving with a more detailed composition, from Northern Netherlands, workshop of Alexander Baert, circa 1717-1770, ex Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, 22 March 1956, lot 179, now in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Gift from Archer M. Huntington).
