Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, Winterthur, Delaware

Christie's, New York, Collection of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Britton, January 16, 1999, sale 9068, lot 553

Wolf Family Collection No. 1160 (acquired from the above on January 16, 1999)

Ellen G. Miles, Saint-Mémin and the Neoclassical Profile Portrait in America, Washington D.C.: National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian Institution Press, 1994, p. 264-5, no. 140.

When the Winterthur Museum acquired this portrait, the sitter was identified as a member of the notable Virginia Carter family of planters, possibly a descendant of Robert "King" Carter. Miss Carter married a man named Kilton or Kelton and lived in or near Alexandria, Virginia.
